Aristotle claims that “We be content , then in speaking of such subjects [ethics] and with such premises to indicate the truth roughly and in outline….for it is the mark of an educated man to look for precision in each class of things just so far as the subject matter allows…”(p.618) According to Aristotle what is it about [practical reasoning about] ethics that makes the truth rough and imprecise? What for Aristotle is his solution, so far as there is one, to this imprecision?

Compare and contrast with Aristotle’s view that expressed by Mill in the following remarks. “I admit or, rather, earnestly maintain [that] the corollaries from the principle of utility, like the precepts of every practical art, admit od indefinite improvement and, in a progressive state of the human mind, their improvement is perpetually going on” (Utilitarianism, p. 589).

“As it is useful that while mankind is imperfect there should be opinions, so it is that there should be different experiments in living” (On Liberity, p. 58)

“Originality is a valuable element in human affairs. There is always need of persons not only to discover new truths… but to commence ne practices…”(On Liberity p.66)
